How to Nail Wood to Basement Walls When Framing

Most unfinished basements have concrete block or cement walls. If you're framing in your basement with wooden furring strips or 2-by-4-inch boards, one important consideration is how to attach the boards to the wall. There are several ways to do this, and one of these is to nail the boards to the wall. You'll need some specialized nails and drill bits to accomplish this, but it's a suitable way to do the job.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • 1/8-inch wood drill bit
  • Pencil

Instructions

    • 1

Place your wooden furring strip or 2-by-4-inch board against the wall in the desired location. A helper is useful here -- have him hold the board in position.

    • 2

Drill holes through the wood at 16-inch intervals, starting 2 inches up from the bottom of the board. Drill through the wood and let the tip of the drill bit lightly score the wall behind the board at each location. Remove the board.

    • 3

Mark each of the scored locations on the wall with a pencil. Wrap a piece of masking tape around the masonry drill bit 3/4 inch from the tip. Drill into each of the marked locations until your bit reaches the tape mark.

    • 4

Replace the board in position. Hammer a masonry nail into each of the holes in the wood, and into the wall of the basement.

Repeat the process for each of the pieces of wood you need to mount on the wall.
