Wipe down the entertainment center to remove dust and other grime. Sand the wood of the unit to prepare it for painting. Wipe the dust created by the sanding process so the paint sticks.
Remove the doors from the entertainment center. Prime and paint the doors separately if you plan to put them back on the unit.
Apply a coat of primer to the entertainment center. After the primer dries, apply two or three layers of paint with a roller to get a smooth finish. Let the paint dry between each coat.
Hang the doors back onto the entertainment center if desired. Leave one or more doors off if you want open shelving on the entertainment center.
Add shelving in the TV area of the entertainment center for additional storage. Another option is to add a short curtain or closet rod near the top of the TV area. Use the rod to hang your child's jackets, for instance.
Place baskets or plastic storage bins on the shelving in the repurposed unit. Containers will help you keep items organized on the shelving.
Use the top of the entertainment center for additional storage. Stack items on top, or add bookends and use the top to store books.
Screw hooks or pegs along the sides of the entertainment center. Use the pegs to hang items or bags for additional storage.
