How to Make a Workbench from Cabinets

Old cabinetry serves as a base for a homemade workbench and allows you to put together the worktop quickly. In addition to supporting the work surface, the cabinets add built-in storage underneath. A thick sheet of plywood provides the work surface. If you have additional cabinets available, mount them to the wall above the work bench. This creates a custom garage workbench and storage center for all of your tools and supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose two kitchen base cabinets from a home improvement store or cabinets that are recycled from your own home or someone else's. Base cabinets are typically a standard 34-1/2 inches tall, which is a functional height for a workbench.

    • 2

Position the two cabinets on the floor of the garage where you want to place the workbench. Space the cabinets to determine how long you want the work surface of the bench to be. The length is a matter of personal preference that takes into consideration the amount of space available on the wall.

    • 3

Screw the cabinets into the wall through a stud. This gives the base of the workbench stability so the cabinets don't shift.

    • 4

Measure from the outer edge of one cabinet to the outer edge of the other cabinet to get the measurement for the worktop. Measure the cabinetry from front to back, which should be about 24 inches. This gives you your dimensions for the plywood. A slight overhang is fine, but too much overhang causes instability at the ends of the workbench.

    • 5

Cut the plywood to size. Center the piece of plywood over the cabinets. Ensure that there's the same amount of overhang on both ends.

    • 6

Nail the plywood into the cabinets below to keep the top from shifting. Predrill holes and screw the top to the cabinets for additional stability.
