How to Build Lower Closet Rods

It often seems that there is never enough space in a closet no matter how large it is. One way to maximize the available storage space in your closet is to add a second hanging rod below the first one; this effectively doubles the amount of space you have available for hanging up clothes. Installation of a second, lower closet rod is a surprisingly simple task that can be performed by nearly anyone, often in less than half an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the rod that is currently in your closet using a measuring tape. Purchase a new rod from a home improvement store that is the same length, along with a pair of brackets.

    • 2

Find the studs in the side walls of your closet. Often, the existing rod will already be placed where there are studs, but double-check with a stud finder to be certain. Mark the location of the stud on each wall with a pencil.

Determine the height at which you’d like to install the new rod. It should be placed high enough so that clothing hanging from it will not touch the floor; typically, a lower rod is placed approximately 40 inches from the floor. Measure up from the floor and mark the desired height over the stud in each wall. These marks will be where you place the brackets for the rod.

Attach one bracket to each of the side walls with screws and a screwdriver or electric drill. Once the brackets have been secured, simply set the rod into the brackets.
