How to Hang File Shelving

File shelves offer a place to store personal or business files without the need for a filing cabinet. This can help save space in a small home office or other area where you need to quickly access files. You can customize file shelves to fit the height and width of your wall, as well as to accommodate the volume of files you need to store. Hanging file shelves requires only basic supplies and carpentry tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the wall to determine the available space for the file shelves.

    • 2

Cut sections of 1-by-12-inch lumber to the desired shelf width with a jigsaw.

    • 3

Locate the wall studs with a stud finder. Mark the location of the studs with a pencil.

    • 4

Place one of the file shelves against the wall. Place a carpenter's level on the shelf and adjust the shelf until it is level. Draw a pencil line on the wall along the bottom of the shelf.

    • 5

Attach shelf brackets on the wall on each stud with 4-inch wood screws and an electric screwdriver, using the shelf line as a guide.

    • 6

Place a shelf on the metal brackets. Secure the shelf to the brackets with 3/4-inch wood screws. Repeat this process for each shelf.
