How to Make a Coke Crate Headboard

A headboard can add a focal point for your bedroom as well as offer additional storage space without utilizing valuable floor space. Though headboards are available for purchase at any furniture retail store, if you wish to add an eccentric style to your room, you may use old Coke crates. Coke crates offer texture and storage while providing a one-of-a-kind appearance.

Determine the number of Coke crates needed for your headboard. The average Coke crate measures just under 12-inches high, 16-inches long and 11-inches wide. Thus, if your bed is two feet off the ground and four feet wide, and you wish the headboard to rise over your bed by three feet, you would need to gather a total of 20 crates. You may locate Coke crates by scouring online or by visiting local grocery stores and asking a manager if they have any old crates.

Gather your materials. You will need to secure the crates together using zip-ties or a hot glue gun. If you’re using zip-ties, you will need a total of 31 zip-ties to fashion each of the crates together.

Move your bed so you have ample working space. Gather the first two crates. Attach the crates together side-by-side using a zip tie. If you are using a hot glue gun, apply a thin layer of glue along the side of the first crate and firmly press the second crate against the glue. Hold in place for 30 seconds and release. Repeat this action until you have four crates attached side-by-side.

Place the fifth crate on top of the first crate, which is the far left crate. Attach this crate the top of the bottom crate using a zip-tie or hot glue. Place the sixth crate on top of the second crate from the left, and attach it to the crate beside it and underneath it. Repeat until you have secured all 20 crates together. You should have four horizontal crates and five crates columns.

Carefully position the bed in front of the crates, and enjoy your new Coke crate headboard.
