Low Attic Loft Ideas

Skylights

• Even if your loft area has a window, consider adding more windows or a few skylights. These will bring more light into the small space to make it appear larger. Place two windows adjacent to one another on both sides of the room to allow for cross ventilation. This allows air to travel through the small space. For added decoration, build a staircase instead of a ladder leading up to the loft.

Tall Ceiling

• If the loft space is too small to create a room, consider removing the ceiling of an upper room floor. You instantly gain space by knocking it out. Remove the entire ceiling or only part of it to keep the loft. For example, knocking out the entire ceiling creates a tall, cathedral ceiling in the room below. You can also remove part of it to make the loft space bigger. Either way, the building must be able to adapt to the ceiling’s removal.

Bedroom

• Turn a low attic loft into a small bedroom by choosing furniture that doubles as storage. Use a captain’s bed that has drawers that run along the bottom of the bed. Other space-saving furniture includes ottomans with interior compartments and stackable storage containers. To turn the area into a bedroom, consider installing electricity, cable, internet, phone and a bathroom. If you have enough room, hire a plumber to install a toilet, sink and possibly a shower. The room is ideal for guests or children.

Office

• A loft is the perfect place for an office, as it is usually a quiet area. Place a desk and file cabinet in the room to get started. Other options include artificial or real potted plants, bright lighting and bookshelves. Hang a chalkboard or dry erase board on the wall. Another option is to paint one wall with chalkboard paint. Place an assortment of pens, chalk, dry erase markers, crayons and markers on the desk.
