How to Build a Portable Garage

Estimate the portable garage size in length, width and height and determine the shape that you believe will fit your needs. Portable garages range in size from as small as 10 feet and up to 40 feet or more and range in shape from rectangle to round forms.

Review various types of portable garage kits. Keep in mind, when reviewing types and styles of portable garages that, like outdoor tent manufacturers, portable garages kit manufacturers offer a variety of materials and special features. Some of these features may include UV protection, anchoring, waterproof coverings, zipper panels additional paneling to create an enclosed space and warranties. Pay special notice to cover materials such as canvas and industrial strength polyethylene and the exterior color of cover materials.

Buy a portable garage kit and follow the instructions included. Most portable garage manufacturers sell "bolt" and "screw" style kits in which you simply thread together nuts onto bolts or screws and thread the bolts or screws through steel tubes to create a frame. Once the frame is complete, pull the cover up and over the frame.

Check the kit's inventory before you begin to verify that the kit came with all of its parts and to see if you will need any additional tools. Some of the more common tools needed for this type of project are a level, screwdriver, wrench, ladder and a rubber mallet or sledge hammer.

Secure the portable garage with frame anchors once you have built the garage. If your portable garage did not come with anchors (stake or weight style), purchase weight anchors and securely attach them to the four corners of the portable garage so that it will not blow away.
