How to Build a Playroom Storage Wall System

Children need a lot of storage for their toys. If you don't have a good storage system, inevitably your child will strew his playtime favorites all around the floor and probably lose small parts and make games unplayable. Cube wall storage is one option that will keep toys organized and off the floor. It also lets you display the kids' favorite stuffed animals and figures, and you can use baskets to group similar items. Hang individual cubes on the wall in any quantity and pattern that pleases you.

Instructions

  1. Building a Cube

    • 1

Measure, mark and cut two 18-inch long sections from the one-by-12 board. Measure, mark and cut two 16 1/2-inch long sections from the one-by-12 board.

    • 2

Assemble the four board sections to create an open-faced cube. Use the 18-inch-long boards horizontally as the top and bottom of the cube and the 16 1/2-inch boards vertically as the sides.

    • 3

Insert two wood screws, 1 1/2 inches long, spaced six inches apart, through the top of the cube into the edges of each of the vertical sides. Flip the cube upside down and repeat to secure the open-faced cube.

    Mounting a Cube

    • 4

Locate a stud at the height you want to place a cube on the wall and mark its location.

    • 5

Place one of the 2-inch L-brackets over the mark and insert a 1 1/2-inch screw most of the way into the wall. The L-bracket should be held in place but not so tightly that you can't rotate it. Orient the L-bracket so that the leg that sticks out from the wall is at the top.

    • 6

Determine where to place the second L-bracket with the aid of a level. Rest one end of the level on top of the first L-bracket. Hold the second L-bracket up to the wall in the same orientation as the first, approximately 12 inches over. Rest the level on the second L-bracket, then slide the bracket up and down until the bubble indicates that the brackets are even. Mark the screw holes for the second bracket.

    • 7

Place the tip of the awl on the marked location perpendicular to the wall. Tap the head of the awl with the hammer to make a large enough hole to insert the end of the plastic anchor, but not so large that the anchor moves loosely. Repeat for the second marked screw location.

    • 8

Place the tip of the plastic anchor into the hole and hold the anchor perpendicular to the wall. Hammer the head of the plastic anchor until the anchor is fully inserted in the wall. Repeat for the second screw hole.

    • 9

Secure the second L-bracket to the wall by inserting a 1 1/2-inch-long wood screw, through the L-bracket and into the wall anchor. Check the level of both L-brackets again and tighten all the screws. Insert a second screw into the first L-bracket, securing it to the wall.

    • 10

Hang the cube on the two L-brackets. Secure the L-brackets to the underside of the top of the cube with 1/2-inch-long wood screws.
