Do it Yourself Garage Remodel

The garage can be a great addition to your home, but sometimes it is neglected. Unfortunately, it becomes just a place to park the car and store the lawnmower. However, with the right amount of storage and a few simple tricks you can really turn your garage into a dynamic room.
  1. Install Simple Shelving

    • A DIY garage remodel doesn't have to be extensive. It can start simple with the addition of metal rack shelves. These handy shelving units are made from long braces that screw into the wall studs. These braces have slots for adjustable shelves that can be set at any height. Set the braces about two feet apart and then install your shelves to start organizing and remodeling the garage space.

    Finish the Floor

    • The most difficult part about garage remodeling is what to do with the concrete floor. Today we have special flooring paint that can be applied in less than a day and it will make your floor look like new. This paint creates a shiny, detailed floor surface that is impervious to stains, cleans easily and gives the floor a new patterned look. Cover the floor with this special garage floor paint and you are well on your way to a new, exciting space.

    Lighting

    • Lighting in the garage is always a problem, but the best solution is the brightest one too. Fluorescent light fixtures can be installed in the garage ceiling to spread more light on the area. These fixtures are available at large home improvement stores. It takes some wiring skill, but the fixtures all have detailed wiring diagrams. Connect them to your existing wiring and voila, your garage is starting to take shape.

    Walls and Ceiling

    • Most garages have drywall installed on the interior walls and ceilings, but if not, this should be the first thing you consider. You can use 1/2-inch drywall for the walls to help dampen noise and further insulate the garage area. Adding a layer of fiberglass insulation to the wall frame will also benefit your heating bill, especially if your heating system is connected to the garage. Ceilings can be fitted with 1/4- or 1/2-inch drywall using a drywall lifter and a ladder. Paint these with primer, sand and then finish with a coat of interior paint for a new look. Drywall can also be installed on cement block garages by adding 2x4 boards to the walls. Attach them with mortar screws or a hammer gun and then mount the drywall to the 2x4 boards.
