Kitchen Remodel Ideas for Tall Ceilings

Tall ceilings are usually considered an asset in a space. However, if you have a kitchen with tall ceilings, this scenario can pose a challenge in determining the configuration of the room. What do you do with that odd space left above the kitchen cabinets? How do you appropriately light the room? How can you use this extra space for vertical storage? Consider these strategies for remodeling a kitchen with tall ceilings.
  1. Cabinet Ideas for Kitchens with Tall Ceilings

    • In kitchens with average ceiling heights, around 8 feet, the cabinets often extend to the ceiling or are met with a small soffit. However, if your kitchen has a high ceiling, extending your cabinets to meet it may be unrealistic. The cabinets would have to be ordered in custom sizes, which is more expensive than standard cabinet sizes. Also, you would not be able to reach the upper shelves, requiring a step stool, which is not practical when you are in the middle of preparing dinner.
Instead, install cabinets of typical height (around 7 feet, 6 inches from the floor to the top of the cabinet) and make creative use of the space above. Use it to display art objects such as sculptures, or potted plants. Use the space to store rarely used kitchen items in attractive boxes. If you don't want empty space above your cabinets, Install a soffit that forms a cove ceiling to mediate the difference in ceiling height, which will bring the scale of the room down a bit for a cozier environment. Another option which is more inexpensive is to install deep crown molding in your kitchen, which is appropriate for the scale of the space.

    Lighting Kitchens with Tall Ceilings

    • Lighting is important in kitchens, from general lighting to task lighting. Recessed lighting or ceiling fixtures alone may not be enough to adequately light a kitchen with tall ceilings. Pendant lighting is a good option, however. Consider installing pendant lighting above kitchen islands for a contemporary effect that will aid in illuminating this work surface.
For a more dramatic effect, install cove lighting above kitchen cabinets that casts a glow upward. This lighting effect will emphasize the height of the space and highlight any decorative items in this zone.

Storage Ideas for Kitches with Tall Ceilings

    • Tall ceilings provide more storage opportunities for your kitchen, especially if the floor space of your kitchen is limited. As mentioned earlier, the space above cabinets can be used as extra storage space, but don't forget the space above your kitchen island. This is an ideal location to install a pot rack, which will free up valuable cabinet space. Select a pot rack that has adjustable suspension so you can it install it low enough to access. Similarly, open shelves can be suspended above your island for extra storage space.
