How to Choose Paint Colors for Your Basement

Windows naturally give light to most of the rooms in the home. But, when it comes to the basement, it comes down to choosing the right paint colors. Frequently dark and dank, basements are almost like caves or caverns. Unlike the upstairs area of the house that has many large windows, basements frequently have only a few small windows. Therefore, the right interior design decisions can create a space which feels large, airy and light.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a primer before you choose a topcoat. Most basements are merely cement bricks, so get a good cement primer before painting.

    • 2

Choose a lighter color paint for the walls. This will reflect any and all light which will create a light and airy space. Using darker colors will make a basement look like a dungeon and should be avoided.

    • 3

Use a semi gloss paint, as much to reflect light as well as resisting moisture. Basements are inherently damp, and if you use a flat paint, the dampness will penetrate the paint surface and possibly cause mold and mildew to form.
