How to Build a Room in Garage Loft

Windows and Access

  Add windows and access points for your garage room before you begin anything else.

  If you have an attached garage, and are therefore going to access the room from the second floor of your existing home, you will need to cut a door between the two, and finish the door frame on both sides. If your garage is not attached to your home, you'll need to cut a door into the loft, and build stairs that go from either the inside of the garage to the loft, or from the outside of the garage to the door.

  Cut windows in the garage loft to fit your desires and needs for your room. A good room should have a least one window on each side to provide light to the room.

Electricity and Plumbing

  Run electricity up into the garage loft. Unless you are a certified electrician, do not attempt to do this on your own. The room above the garage should have at minimum three to four outlets, and more if you plan on having someone live there full-time.

  Have the electrician install outlets, wall switches, and overhead lights.

  Install plumbing in the room if you would like to have a bathroom or a kitchenette in the room. If you are not a certified plumber, do not attempt to do this on your own. Hire someone to do it. Install any fixtures, such as toilets, sinks or showers, to go along with the plumbing you are having done.

  Reinforce the floors of the garage loft by adding support beams, filling in the areas between beams, and laying new flooring.

  Choose a tile or carpet for the loft that is livable. Insulate and fill in walls and the roof structure.

  Add drywall if needed and not already there. Paint and finish the walls, ceiling, and floors.

  Install any of the built-ins that your room will need, such as countertops or cabinets. Bring in appliances or other features.
