How to Design a Project Room

Your home is a place where comfort and relaxation occur. If you have a hobby like photography, a dark room is desired. In this case, a room specifically made for projects could be what you are looking for. Depending on what pastime you choose, this can be a great opportunity to expand your artistic capabilities. Organization and planning is the key to designing a project room, but it is well worth the trouble once you have finished designing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Using a tape measure, measure the dimensions of the room and note them on the sketch pad.

    • 2

Using the sketch pad and ruler, draw a scaled model of the room and the areas that will hold the supplies and furniture.

    • 3

Decide what purpose your project room will serve. Hardwood floors are best to have because of easy cleaning, whether it's a painting room or any other project room. It is a good idea to have surge protectors if you are planning to use several electric appliances like standing lamps for lighting, a screen projector for filmmaking, or a light box (see the References section) for tracing and sketching purposes.

Large, rectangular and spacious tables are a smart idea, and serve multiple purposes for drawing, painting, photography and other various forms of art. You can place supplies on them, or store stacks of paper. Picking a cabinet for the room is also a good idea for storing items that need to be in a cool, dark environment like film strips or paints, or even molding clays that cannot be exposed to dry air.

Look through furniture and hobby catalogs and determine what items you will need to furnish your project room. Write down the dimensions of each piece on your sketch pad to help you decide what pieces will fit properly.

Prepare your new project room for renovations by removing any objects or items from the area, and storing them in a designated spot. Vacuum the floors to have a clean surface, and you'll be ready to begin bringing your design to life.
