How to Install a Toto Toilet on Tile

Installing a new Toto toilet is a smart choice for many homeowners. The low-flow toilets use up to half the water with every flush when compared to standard toilets. That means saving money. You can also save money by installing one yourself. Some considerations need to be accounted for when installing a Toto toilet on tile. A seasoned do-it-yourselfer can get it done in an afternoon. Less experienced ones may need an entire day.

Instructions

  1. Install Toilet

    • 1

Place a rag in the waste pipe to block odors and prevent debris from falling in.

Install a closet flange extension. Tile raises the level of the floor, so accommodations will need to be made to correctly install the toilet and ensure a water-tight seal. The extension comes in a kit which includes various thickness plastic flanges that lock together along with extra-long closet bolts and adhesive.

    • 2

Insert the closet bolts, heads down and threads up, into the slots on the side of the flange. Apply a bead of glue around the flange and stack the new flanges until they are level with the tile. Apply adhesive between each flange. The flanges can extend 1/4 or 1/2 inch above the floor. The closet flange must be level or just above floor level.

    • 3

Turn the toilet bowl upside down and carefully place it on padding. Place the wax ring into the circular recess around the bowl’s horn. Press it firmly into place. Turn the bowl over and position it over the closet flange and bolts. Press the bowl firmly down without twisting or rocking until it is level with the floor.

    • 4

Place washers and nuts onto each bolt. Alternate tightening the bolts by hand. Stop tightening when there is firm resistance. Over tightening the bolts could crack the base. Trim the bolts down to two threads above the nut with a hacksaw. Install plastic bolt covers.

    • 5

Lay the tank on its back on the padding. Thread a rubber washer onto each of the tank bolts. Put the bolts through the holes on the tank with the rubber inside the tank. Slide a washer and nut over each bolt from the outside.

    • 6

Upright the tank and lower it onto the bowl by guiding the tank bolts into the holes on the back of the bowl. Tighten a metal water and nut onto each bolt. Make sure the tank is level by alternating from each nut while tightening. Do not over tighten. Connect the handle to the flapper chain and replace the tank lid.

    • 7

Flush the water supply line to remove any debris. Connect the water supply line to the fill valve and tighten by hand.

    • 8

Install the toilet seat using the hardware that came with the toilet. Place the seat on the bowl and position the seat stopper under the seat hinge. Insert a bolt into the seat hinge and through the bowl. Tighten a bolt from underneath. Install bolt caps.
