Bathroom Ventilation Installation

Installing a bathroom ventilation fan involves a couple of steps that might seem intimidating, but it is something most do-it-yourselfers should be able to accomplish. Make sure you have the correct supplies and tools to install the vent cap in the roof or an outside wall, and that you have a knowledge of the electrical skills required.
  1. Remove Existing Fixture

    • If you are installing an exhaust fan in an existing bathroom, chances are there is an existing light fixture that you will replace. If so, turn off the power to that fixture and remove it.

Cut a Hole for the Fan Housing

    • Determine the placement for the fan and trace around the housing, making marks on the ceiling with a pencil so you can see where to cut. Remove the drywall using a reciprocating saw or a drywall saw.

Install the Ductwork and Vent Cap Flashing

    • Your best bet is to have the shortest amount of ductwork possible, and use galvanized steel duct pipe. Insulate the ductwork and make sure you install the flashing on the roof correctly to make sure you don't get leaks. Cut a round hole in the roof, making sure it is in a section of flat roof away from any other vents, dormers or edges. Position the flashing underneath the shingles that are above it and over top of the shingles below the hole. Use roofing caulk to seal any nail holes. If you don't have experience with roof work, read up on it and take safety precautions, or hire a roofer to do this part. If you are installing a fan in a bathroom of a lower floor without roof access, install a vent in the outer wall, but make sure it is in a part of the wall away from any soffits or other obstructions.

    Complete the Electrical Wiring

    • If you are replacing an existing fixture, you can use the same wiring. If not, you may want to hire a an electrician to add a switch and run the wires in the ceiling. Check the instructions that come with the fan to determine whether a new circuit needs to be installed or if you can use an existing circuit.

    Install the Fan

    • Follow the instructions that come with the fan to install it in the ceiling and place the grill and any other outer parts in place. If your fan has a light in it, install a light bulb before you put the final cover in place.
