Kitchen Adjoining Room Ideas

Maximizing the space you have available is a major part of planning and furnishing a house. If you have a room adjoining the kitchen that doesn't have a set purpose, you are free to let your creativity take over. Before you decide on a purpose for this room, figure out your family's habits and needs. Decide whether you need more space for organization, storage, relaxation or recreation.
  1. Breakfast Nook

    • A breakfast nook provides a place for the family to gather or run through during the morning routine. It can be as simple as a place to sit with a cup of coffee, or function as a breakfast bar with cabinets and countertops. You can add dishes, breakfast food, a toaster or a mini-fridge. The size of the room may limit the size of the table you put in a breakfast nook and how many accessories you can add. If you have a bay window, add a window seat and small table.

    Family Organization Center

    • A room dedicated to calendars, paperwork and scheduling can provide a place to start with a family organization plan. Adding a desk and dry-erase board can be a beginning. Filing cabinets can help with organizing paperwork and paying bills. Baskets keep mail and other important documents organized and also could be a good place to keep car keys, lunch boxes and backpacks. You can use this space for menu-planning, or the kids can work on homework while you make meals.

    Pantry

    • Depending on the size of the room, a pantry may be a handy use for it. Adding cabinets or shelves provide a space to keep canned goods and other pantry items, especially if you shop at bulk discount stores. You also can combine the pantry with other functions, making part of it food storage, adding a message center, and keeping a countertop or table stocked with coffee, cups, creamer and sugar, granola bars and other quick breakfast food.
