Basement Wall Repair

Basement wall repair is important for any house with a basement. It is important to fix problems early to avoid expensive, drastic repairs. Several forms of basement repair can even be completed on your own with just a few products and tools.
  1. Crack Repair

    • Crack repairs are the easiest form of basement repair, and they are one of the only repairs that can be safely completed by anyone but professional basement repair experts. Cracks are formed by pressure on the basement, moisture and temperature changes, and common wear and tear. The first step of crack repair is determining the cause. If it is a foundation issue, that should be addressed by a professional before the cracks are filled. However, if the cracks are caused by temperature or cosmetic issues, they can be fixed on your own. Use a chisel to break away any loose drywall, cement or plaster from the wall. Wipe away dust and debris. Use epoxy adhesive and a surface port to inject the epoxy into the crack. Allow to cure for 30 minutes. Use several different epoxy ports for long cracks. Remove the ports with a hammer after allowing it to cure for 48 hours.

    Stabilization

    • Occasionally basement walls will become bowed. This is usually caused by pressure from the surrounding dirt or from the house above. Tree roots also can cause bowing. The best way to deal with bowed basement walls is to add vertical stabilizers to the walls. Metal stabilizers are usually added to the walls and attached with epoxy glue. Stabilization should not be attempted as a do-it-yourself project.

    Patching

    • If large leaks have attacked the basement or if the walls have become chipped or damaged over time, it can ruin the appearance of a basement. These holes can be easily patched with the right equipment. Make sure the leak will not return before starting. Chip away loose plaster or cement with a chisel and remove dust. Use a hydraulic putty to seal the bottom and sides of the hole. Smooth with a putty knife. Allow to cure for 24 hours. Masonry paste or plaster can then be applied over the remaining hole with a spatula. Allow to dry for at least 24 hours before painting.

    Professional Options

    • When a basement is severely damaged and bowing, it is time to call a professional. If this is not done the basement runs the risk of falling in and creating almost irreparable damage to the basement and the house. While professionals are expensive, it is much more economical to face large problems initially than it is to try and repair them once the problem is much worse.
