Most long dressers with large drawers, usually 3 on each side, and a large mirror attached to the back, can be found in abundance at furniture stores. While these are great for providing a lot of storage and space on top of the dresser, the long dressers take up a lot of floor and wall space. Better quality dressers will be designed with smaller drawers on the top and graduate down with each drawer getting larger. The high end wooden dressers will be made out of maple, mahogany or cherry with average wood quality dressers constructed out of oak or pine.
An inexpensive way to create a long dresser may be to use an old cabinet or hutch or anything that has a lot of drawers or cupboards to store clothing. Place an old countertop or other material on the top and cover with a decorative dresser scarf or strip of material that matches other décor.
Commonly referred to a chest of drawers, these taller, narrower dressers give a lot of drawers without taking up so much floor space.
Other ideas can include tall cabinets with partial shelves and partial drawers to make your own type of armoire. An old kitchen pantry cupboard could be converted to a customized armoire with clothing stored on the shelves and another area converted to accommodate clothes on hangers.
If purchasing a new dresser is not in the budget, you can shop flea markets, antique or thrift stores or garage sales for a bargain dresser. Paint or stain it to spruce up the dresser and add new handles. Stencils can be painted on to add character and coordinate with the rest of the bedroom. Reusing old furniture not only saves you money but will also save trees.
Plastic stackable storage bins with sliding drawers may not be the most attractive choice for a dresser, but they provide an inexpensive way to store small clothing items like socks. These bins can be used in a closet or for small rooms like a dorm room and they are easy to transport.
Small, narrow wooden lingerie chests or nightstands are other options to offer a bit of clothing storage without taking up a lot of space.
Armoires provide an attractive yet practical storage for small clothing items and sometimes have extra small drawers for jewelry or other specialty items. Many are designed with larger drawers on the bottom and a top section that has doors that open to reveal small drawers or a section for hanging clothes.
Built-in dressers are often found in older farm houses. Many have large drawers and clothes hanging compartments built right into the wall. These offer convenience and space saving options.
Another idea is to design and build your own dresser or have a builder make one to your specifications. It may not be any less expensive than purchasing a prebuilt dresser, but it would assure you getting the customization and choices you want in a dresser.
