Sweep the floor to remove and dirt and debris with the broom. Clean the remaining dirt from the floor with cleaning solution and a mop.
Remove any baseboard trim that may be attached to the walls with the pry bar. Move any furniture out of the basement or to another area so it will be out-of-the-way.
Measure the width and length of the basement with the tape measure. Multiply the width by the length to determine the square footage of the room.
Divide the square footage in step 3 by the size of tile that you want to use. This calculation will give you the amount of carpet tiles you will need.
Measure two adjacent walls and locate the center point on each wall. Put a piece of tape on the floor to indicate the center mark.
Place a chalk line on a piece of tape and run it to the opposite wall. Snap the chalk line to put a mark on the floor. Repeat this step on the adjacent wall to create two intersecting lines.
Place tiles on the chalk lines to see how the pattern will look. Remove the backing from a piece of carpet tile and place it in one corner of the intersecting lines that you made in steps 5 and 6. This will be your starting point.
Lay the carpet tile and work outwards from the chalk line towards the walls. Trim the tiles to fit with the utility knife when you reach a wall or edge of the floor.
