Family Room Addition Ideas

Rooms can be added to homes where everyone in the family can gather, read, dine or watch TV together. As with most room additions, the new room is off the side of the home or connects two areas of the house which were not previously connected. There are a number of different design styles and architectural ideas which can be employed when adding on a family room.
  1. Connecting Wings

    • For homes which have different wings that turn back toward each other or those that are only connected by a hallway, a family room addition can be the perfect way to make the house complete. By doing this, the family room will have a couple of entrances and exits, allowing those who live in the home easy access to it. It will also make the room more open and inviting, as it is easy to leave and re-enter at different points of the home. Building between two wings also centralizes the family room in the house, at least on one side of the structure and may even create an outdoor courtyard.

    A One Room Story

    • A family room can be built on top of one section of a one-story home, or as an added section on a three-story home, which will take up the entire story. This way, the room will be separate from the rest of the home, so that messes and fun projects can be laid out and not impact or be impacted by what goes on in the home during day-to-day living. These rooms will also have a lot of light, if built with windows, as they will be above most of the shade. This also means they may be hot, so they should have proper ventilation.

    Backyard Room

    • A room which is built to stand alone, separate from the rest of the home, can naturally connect your home both indoors and outdoors with walkways and gardens between the family room and the main part of the house. Sliding glass doors can also be added along the walls of the family room, so that light can come in, the doors can be opened and the walkways and gardens can become part of the room itself, making it open and visually pleasing.
