Finished Basement Tips & Ideas

A finished basement adds plenty of extra living area to a home. There are many options for use of a finished basement. A little prep work goes a long way when it comes to creating a comfortable finished basement.
  1. Moisture Control

    • One of the most important things to take into account when finishing a basement is the moisture level. For minor moisture problems, putting in a dehumidifier might be all that's necessary. To be on the safe side, or for more pressing moisture issues, waterproof any concrete surfaces of the basement, such as floors or walls. Basement Remodeler explains that waterproofing spray can be easily applied to concrete. This should be the first step, before laying down flooring or decorative walls.

Choose Carpets and Curtains With Care

    • When carpeting a basement, always use the appropriate padding under the rug and avoid carpets that are thick, as these tend to retain moisture. Stick to short pile or industrial carpets for basements, or use other types of flooring, such as tile or laminate. Also avoid using heavy drapes in basements, as these will make the basement even darker and are more likely to retain moisture.

    Create a Home Gym

    • One of the easiest things to do with a basement is to make a home gym or fitness center. Basements are naturally cooler than the rest of the house, as they are at least partly underground and the wide open space that basements provide is ideal for gym equipment, according to Finished Basement Ideas. A basement gym could include a treadmill or stationary bicycle, free weights or space for a rowing machine or aerobic exercise.

    Party Room With Bar

    • Those who enjoy entertaining frequently should consider using a newly finished basement as a bar, media room or game room. Home bars are easy to install and are essential for parties. Put in a big screen television and a few comfortable chairs and you'll have a nice place to relax and watch movies without being disruptive to the rest of the household. Finished basements are also a good spot for game lovers to put in a ping-pong table, pool table, arcade games or an air hockey table.

    Building a Basement Apartment

    • If zoning in the area allows, making a finished basement into a small apartment is something to consider. This might be idea for in-laws or adults living at home with their parents. There is also the option of making an apartment that could be rented out for extra income. Always be sure to obtain proper permits from the town before constructing an apartment, however.
