Warm up your body by jogging in place or doing jumping jacks for several minutes. According to the University Health Services at UC Berkeley, warming up your muscles makes them less prone to pulling and straining.
Put on work gloves to protect your hands and to get a better grip of the machinery.
Put your feet as close to the load as possible so that your body is directly above the load. This will prevent you from having to strain forward or back.
Place your feet shoulder width apart.
Bend your hips and knees and grasp the machinery tightly. Do not bend at the waist or attempt to keep your legs straight.
Lift the machinery slowly onto a dolly. Lifting slowly will help you evaluate the weight of the object to determine if you need someone else to help you lift it onto a dolly.
If a dolly is unavailable, stoop down on one knee and slowly lift the machinery onto your raised knee. Grip the load again and carefully stand up.
