Empty out the space that you have chosen to convert to a food storage room. Check to see if you have a reliable light fixture in the ceiling. Install a strong 100 watt light bulb in the fixture for easy viewing of your storage room contents.
Thoroughly sweep and then mop the floor of the storage room. Rinse the floor completely after mopping, to make sure that all of the soap residue is removed. Allow the floor to air dry completely before adding anything else to the room.
Line three of the walls with shelves, omitting the wall that includes the door. Use metal utility shelving for strength and durability. If your area is large enough, install one or more rows of shelving in the center of the room.
Set a small plastic bin on the shelf nearest the door. Fill the bin with blank adhesive labels and a permanent marker. These items will always stay in the room, so that you have them on hand whenever needed.
Stack plastic bins with lids against the wall with the door. Place lidded trash cans in the same area.
