How to Make a Tree Organizational Chart

Every organization or business has a basic structure, with at least one person at the top and several employees or workers below him. Usually there are people in the middle who have delegated authority or specific roles. If a decision needs to be made, not knowing who does what can confuse all of the people involved. A visual tool like a tree organizational chart helps to keep these roles and reporting chains clear.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper, at least 8 ½-by-11 in., or poster board
  • Pen, pencil or marker
  • Computer with publishing program (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Rotate your paper or poster board to a landscape layout, where the horizontal length is longer than the vertical.

    • 2

Draw a horizontal rectangle near the document's top and center. This box is for the person on top of the organizational chain, such as the president, CEO or similar leader. Put the person's name inside the box and the title beneath the name, or put the just title inside the box if no one occupies that position.

    • 3

Create more boxes for every person who directly reports to the top of the organization. Draw a small vertical line (1/2 in. for an 8-by-11.5 in. paper) extending down from the bottom center of the first box. At the bottom of that vertical line, draw a horizontal line that extends at least 1/2 inch past either side of the top box and connect your second tier to that line. Evenly space the boxes out according to the paper's length, leaving at least a 1-in. margin on either side. Label the boxes as you did for step 1.

    • 4

Draw a third tier of boxes below the second tier for each person who reports to anyone in the second tier. If all of those people have the same position, list their names in their respective boxes and write their position underneath the tier instead of under each box. This saves space on the organizational chart and makes it easier to read.
