When to Fumigate for Termites After Remodeling

When remodeling your house, you may find that you have a termite infestation. Termites should be taken care of as soon as possible to prevent their spread and further damage to your home.
  1. Investigation

    • Fumigation is not necessary unless termites are discovered. If, while remodeling, you come across discarded wings or white egg pellets inside your wood, call an exterminator or building inspector. Termites eat wood 24 hours a day, so investigate the infestation as quickly as possible to avoid damage to your home.

    Cost

    • Tent fumigation of a home is an expensive, complicated process that should only be used if termites are confirmed by an exterminator or building inspector. If the termite infestation is small, isolated or young, then the exterminator may suggest a localized, cheaper method of killing the termites, such as cold or heat treatments. Complete fumigation may push the cost of your remodeling project past your comfort zone.

    Fumigation

    • The home must be abandoned, all plants and animal taken from it and food either removed or placed in special protective cases. A tent is thrown over the home, sealing it up. Gas is pumped in to completely kill the termites and other insects. After two days, the tent is removed and the home is available for reentry.

    Repellant

    • If you are remodeling and want to safeguard against termites, you should have an exterminator lay down repellent around your house to keep termites at bay. Repellent is cheaper, more convenient, and will allow you and your family to stay at home.
