How to Update Your Garage

Your home's garage most likely stores vehicles, bicycles, sporting equipment, unused furniture, photos, keepsake memorabilia and holiday decorations. But the storage capabilities of a garage can often make it a catchall for little-used items. Because of this, garages often become cluttered and unusable. However, when organized and updated, a garage can be a safe place for storing valuables and keepsakes as well as a workplace for crafting and doing construction projects.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Empty the garage. Separate items into three piles: items to keep, items to throw away and items to give away. Toss throw-away items into a trash bin. Donate the give-away items to a charitable organization.

    • 2

Separate your "keep" piles into various plastic bins in coordinating groups. For instance, keep seasonal decorations together in one bin and old photographs and keepsakes in another.

    • 3

Install polyvinyl garage flooring over existing concrete. You can roll out polyvinyl flooring by hand and it does not require adhesives.

    • 4

Replace old garage doors. If your garage door has seen better days, a new one can do wonders for the look of your home as well as the insulation. If you plan to spend time in the garage, install a door with windows to allow for natural light.

Install shelves. Using screws and an electric drill, attach steel brackets to the wall at even intervals. Use a level and tape measure to ensure brackets are hung evenly. Add wooden shelves to the brackets.
