Measure the garage interior and exterior. Use exterior measurements to buy the right amount of paint or siding for upgrading the outside of the structure. Define interior dimensions to plan how to store the car alongside shelves, cabinets and other fixtures. Sketch every section in detail and transfer the drawings to graph paper.
Buy a new garage door. Invest in a wooden door to replace an old metal door, for example. Install heavy-duty tracking for a garage door opening system. Paint the exterior of the garage door to match the main door of the house. Paint the garage door to match the house exterior or trim as other options. Use colored pencils to draw the garage and house on a sketch pad. Figure out the best color scheme before visiting the paint store.
Repair or replace the roof and windows. Replace old asphalt shingles and add energy-efficient windows. Caulk in all appropriate places and paint trim, guttering, soffit areas and exterior window frames.
Install new siding or paint the exterior to match the house. Use high-quality paint over bricks or blocks, but use primer paint to seal surfaces first. Cover masonry work with stucco as another excellent option, especially if the house has sections of stucco work. Use stucco to cover flaws when a lot of repair work is done on blocks or bricks.
Repair flooring. Fix all cracks or pour a new surface of concrete. Take out an old concrete floor entirely before replacing it if the floor has weak places. Hire someone to use a jackhammer to remove old concrete in a timely manner. Use high-quality concrete floor paint to seal the new floor after it's poured. Lay down a roll-out garage floor covering made of polyvinyl as another option.
