Divide your room into manageable shapes such as rectangles, right triangles and circles. Right triangles have one 90 degree corner. If your room is one of these shapes, skip this step. However, if you have a trapezoid shaped room, you could break it into two right triangles and a rectangle.
Measure the necessary dimensions of the room in yards. For rectangles, you must measure the length and the width. For a right triangle, measure the length of the two legs of the triangle. The legs are the two sides the extend from the 90 degree corner. The side opposite the 90 degree corner is the hypotenuse and is not used in the area formula. For a circle, measure the radius.
Figure the area of the room or sections of the room in square yards by using the appropriate area formula. Figure the area of rectangular rooms or sections by multiplying the length times the width. Figure the area of triangular rooms or sections by multiplying 0.5 times the first leg times the second leg. Figure the area of a circle by squaring the radius and multiplying by pi, or 3.14.
Calculate the total square yards of a room by adding the calculated square yardage from each section.
