How to Remodel an Attic Bathroom

Even a tiny bathroom is needed to make attic space user-friendly. Having to descend stairs to visit a bathroom on the floor below is inconvenient. Remodeling the existing bathroom to work with a bonus room or bedroom might require enlarging it. If plumbing and electricity are already in the bathroom, the remodel should be easier. Good-quality fixtures, ample space and fresh wall paint make any bath space pleasurable to use. Upgrades might include adding only a new sink or shower unit. But, adding new tile flooring or a skylight will give the room more visual appeal.

Instructions

    • 1

Increase light and space. Install a high-quality skylight or dormer window to add natural light. Plan to paint the walls white and add white tile flooring, for example. Look for ways to expand the room by borrowing nearby floor space. Use room from an attic closet or space under the eaves to make the bathroom bigger. Obtain a copy of building codes to define height (headroom) for clearance on sloping walls.

    • 2

Select appropriate fixtures. Find a sink vanity made of oak or cherry, for example, to match furniture in an attic bedroom. Buy a bathtub on legs for turning the space into a relaxation area with a spa feeling. Find out if fixtures can be carried to the attic with no space limitation issues. Look for alternate ways to hoist a bathtub up via window space, for example. Remove an attic window and build a pulley system to move the tub up to the attic floor area.

    • 3

Design new walls. Plan to install tiles, wallpaper over drywall, or bead-board paneling for a fresh look. Plan flooring that harmonizes with the walls. Choose new light fixtures, towel bars and cabinets. Create the overall design to fit with a nearby attic room, if there is one.

    • 4

Prepare to remove old materials. Disconnect plumbing and electricity. Tear out walls and fixtures. Carry materials out of the house, and clean the bathroom space thoroughly. Install new plumbing, light fixtures and outlets. Finish walls and seat new fixtures, except the toilet.

Complete flooring last. Lay tile or vinyl flooring before installing the toilet. Add final touches such as towel bars, wall cabinets and shelving.
