How to Remodel a 5-Foot-by-8-Foot Bathroom

Remodeling a 5-foot-by-8-foot bathroom is a project that may seem daunting, but it is important to understand that you may not need to update and replace everything. When deciding what to replace, look at the outdated items or any aspect of the bathroom that does not match the design theme you are trying to accomplish. In addition to replacing certain pieces of your bathroom, there are a couple of things you can do to create the feel of a larger bathroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the walls and ceiling of the bathroom in a light-colored paint scheme. Light colors give the appearance of a larger space. The ceiling can tend to get dingy over the years; touching it up with a light-colored paint can make the space feel renewed.

    • 2

Install wall-length mirrors on one or two walls of the bathroom. Mirrors complement the light-colored paint and adds to the illusion of a larger space.

    • 3

Replace the sink with a pedestal sink to provide the bathroom with more floor space. A pedestal sink does not have cabinet space below the sink.

    • 4

Install shelving above the toilet or sink to make up for the storage space that you lost by replacing the sink. This gives you the chance to use a type of shelving that accents the theme in your bathroom. You can use a variety of colors, even a splash of bold pattern, to offset the light colors if you want variety.

    • 5

Install a window in your bathroom if you do not already have one, which provides natural light. If you are worried about privacy, purchase a frosted window so you cannot see through it unless the window is open.

    • 6

Replace the flooring with hardwood floors, ceramic tiles or marble. If your home is dated, it probably has linoleum or carpeting in the bathroom, update this aspect of the bathroom during your remodeling project.
