Instructions

    • 1

Sketch a basic layout for your basement design. You must have a clear understanding of how you intend to use the space. Measure the space and draw your basement design to scale using graph paper or a computer drafting program. Confirm that your layout will work within the constraints of your existing basement.

    • 2

Modify your home's air conditioning system to include the basement. Check to see that your existing system can handle the extra load. If not, you should upgrade your air conditioner or furnace, or add an additional unit. Extend the ductwork to adequately condition your basement.

    • 3

Install wiring to power the space. Plan for overhead lighting as well as outlets around the room.

    • 4

Install metal or wood studs around the perimeter of the space if they are not already in place. Roll batt insulation between the studs to insulate the basement and help keep your heating costs low. Also frame out interior basement walls, if you have chosen to add them.

    • 5

Hang drywall to finish out your basement space. Patch, prime and paint these walls to create a finished look.

    • 6

Hang light fixtures, add outlet covers and nail any molding or trim to your walls if desired. Install furniture and other decor to complete your basement remodel.
