How to Convert a Garage Into a Play Room

Children come with a lot of stuff --- and have a tendency to overrun a lot of homes with their toys. If you just can't deal with stepping on another Lego in your living room but don't have a room to turn into a designated play space, then converting your garage might be a solution. What you lose in storage and parking you'll gain in an organized home and a safe, substantial space for your children to play.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove everything from the garage. Find alternative storage for tools, chemicals and anything else that could be dangerous to children.

    • 2

Clean the garage. Sweep the floor to remove dirt and debris. Check for evidence of insects or other pests. If you think that there are mice or other rodents in the garage, consult with an exterminator to remove them from the garage.

    • 3

Finish the garage walls if they are not ready to be painted. Install sheet rock or wall board and insulation. If you do not know how to install walls, hire a professional or get help to ensure that the job is done properly.

    • 4

Address the garage ceiling. In most garages, the ceiling is unfinished. Hire professionals to finish the ceiling and install the wiring for overhead lighting. Finishing the ceiling will help keep the playroom warm and well lit. It could also create some storage space above the playroom, depending on the type of ceiling you choose.

    • 5

Clean the garage floor, using a product designed for that job. Carefully remove all oil and other vehicle fluids from the floor. Apply a sealant to help keep it clean.

    • 6

Paint the walls in the color of your choice. Use a paint finish that is can be cleaned with soap and water; glossy finishes are generally easy to clean, and some manufacturers offer paint in other finishes that can be cleaned.

    • 7

Add carpet to the floor. Add substantial padding under the carpet to cushion children when they fall. Carpet tiles are a good choice in a playroom, as you can create a custom look and easily replace tiles that are stained or dirty.

    • 8

Install shelves or cabinets to store toys, books and other playthings. Because children might be tempted to climb on the units and then fall, secure storage to the walls
