How to Split a Queen Box Spring to Get It Upstairs

Moving furniture into a new house or apartment can be troublesome if the building does not have high ceilings. Large or oddly shaped furniture, such as a box spring, can be difficult to move up staircases or through narrow hallways. In many cases, there is not enough ceiling clearance to allow the box spring to pass through. Rather than allowing yourself to get agitated, get handy by splitting the queen box spring while maintaining its strength and integrity.

Things You'll Need

  • Hand saw
  • Rope
  • 4 metal plates

Instructions

    • 1

Place the box spring on a flat, dry surface with the bottom of the box spring facing up. Using a tape measure, determine where the center of the box spring is and mark it with a pencil.

    • 2

Sever the material of the dust cover by taking a razor blade and slicing the fabric in a clean straight manner down the middle of the box spring. Continue to separate the dust cover with the blade down the entire length of the box spring until all the fabric is divided into equal parts.

    • 3

Saw the wood at the center point of the box spring at the head and foot. This will leave you with a split box spring with two halves of the same size. You may see a metal bar or rod. Do not cut or alter this metal rod.

    • 4

Bend the box spring in half carefully with an assistant. An alternative option to this step if you don't have any assistance is to fold the box spring in a doorway. You may feel some resistance as you do this from the springs inside the box spring.

    • 5

Secure the box spring with some sturdy rope or twine. Loop the rope around the box spring multiple times and secure it tightly so that it does not come loose while you are moving it. Using the ropes, lift the box spring and carry to your desired destination.

    • 6

Unfold the box spring by unfastening the ropes and laying the box spring flat on the floor, bottom side up. Make sure that all the spring coils are lined up correctly.

    • 7

Install two metal plates at the head and the foot of the box spring where you sawed earlier. The metal plates will restore the structural integrity to your box spring.

Secure the box spring by installing two metal plates at the head and the foot of the box spring where you used your hand saw earlier. The metal plates will restore the structural integrity to your box spring.

Reattach the dust cover to your box spring with a staple gun. You don't have to overdo it with the staples, just make sure the dust cover is secure. Return your box spring to its normal state by flipping it over.
