How to Make Rainier Cherry Seeds Germinate

The Rainier cherry is a hybridized variety of the fruit that is a cross between the Bing and Van cherry. These cherries are sweet but are not very tolerant of drought, wind or extreme cold. If you live in an area optimal for growing them, you can germinate Rainier cherry seeds at home and plant them in your landscape. Germinating a rainier cherry seed isn't difficult, but takes a little patience.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Peat Germination

    • 1

Place a single peat moss pod onto the center of the disposable pie tin.

    • 2

Lay the cherry pit or seed, onto the center of the peat moss disc or pod.

    • 3

Add 1 cup of water to the pod and pie tin. The peat moss disc will immediately soak up the liquid and increase in size by at least four times. It will envelop the seed as you do this.

    • 4

Place the pie tin in a sunny windowsill and add 1 cup of water to it once a week until the seed sprouts. A tiny greenish-white sprout should form in seven to 14 days.

    Paper Towel Germination

    • 5

Soak a paper towel in warm water. Wring it out thoroughly so that it is only damp.

    • 6

Place the Rainier cherry seed into the paper towel and wrap it.

    • 7

Drop the moist paper towel-wrapped seed into the jar. Secure the lid onto the jar. Puncture one tiny hole into the top of it with a sharp knife.

    • 8

Place the jar in a dark, dry area. Under your kitchen sink is an adequate location. Let it sit there for four days. Open the jar and unwrap the paper towel. If the seed has germinated, proceed to planting. If the paper towel is dry, add 1/8 cup of water to the jar and close it. Let it sit for an additional four days. The seed should germinate in the paper towel within seven to 10 days.
