How to Install a Fan on Slanted Ceiling

Ceiling fans normally attach to the flat surface of the ceiling, which makes it easy enough for them to hang straight down and turn properly. If the ceiling is slanted (as in a peaked or cathedral ceiling), you'll need a special installation bracket that attaches to the ceiling electrical box and then adjusts so the bottom plane is level. You will need an extension rod to lower the blades far enough to clear the slope of the ceiling.

Things You'll Need

  • Step ladder
  • Screwdriver
  • Angled ceiling fan bracket (adjustable)
  • Level
  • Ceiling fan (with extension rod)
  • Wire nuts

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the existing ceiling light fixture, at the house circuit box.

    • 2

Remove the existing fixture, taking out the screws holding it to the ceiling and disconnecting the wire behind it. This will leave an exposed electrical box with black, white and bare grounding wires coming from it.

    • 3

Attach the angled ceiling fan bracket to the electrical box on the ceiling, using the provided screws. Set a level along the bottom of the bracket, moving it with the adjustment screw until it's level.

    • 4

Twist the bare ground wire from the ceiling electrical box around the green ground screw on the bracket. Tighten up the screw.

    • 5

Assemble the fan on the floor, including the extension rod, which should have a black and a white wire running through it. Don't install the blades.

    • 6

Hold the fan on top of the ladder near the angled bracket. Link the black wire from the fan unit to the black wire from the ceiling, using a wire cap to make the connection. Do the same with the two white wires.

    • 7

Set the top of the extension rod in the bracket, using the screws that came with the fan. Install the blades as directed. Restore the power.
