How to Reduce Noise in a Large Room

Like a room of any size, a large room can be noisy due to external sound coming in through walls, floors, ceilings and windows. Unlike smaller rooms, though, large rooms have the issue of echo with which to contend. Echo is caused by the reflection of sound waves against the walls of the room. If you want to reduce noise in a large room, it's essential to dampen both external and internal sound.

Things You'll Need

  • Insulating curtains
  • Acoustic panels
  • Carpet, area rugs or rubber tiles
  • Furniture
  • Room dividers

Instructions

    • 1

Install insulating curtains, such as blackout or sound curtains, over the windows in the large room to prevent the noise that comes in through the glass. Keep the curtains closed over the windows to dampen the sound.

    • 2

Hang insulating curtains over the walls of the large room. When placed on a wall, insulating curtains absorb sound, which prevents the sound from bouncing around the room to create echo.

    • 3

Place acoustic panels on shared walls and ceilings where noise is an issue. Install acoustic panels using the hardware provided with the panels. The hardware usually consists of hangers that attach to the back of each panel and hang on screws or nails on the wall, much like the hangers on the backs of picture frames.

    • 4

Cover the floor of the room with carpet, which absorbs sound, unlike hard flooring surfaces which reflect it. If you want a less permanent solution, put down a large area rug that covers the entire floor, or several smaller area rugs or rubber tiles. Rubber tiles lock together on the edges and require no adhesive or hardware for installation.

Break up the space. Any item that you place into a large room breaks up the space, which in turn reduces the amount of echo in the room. Add furniture to the room to block the sound waves or put up room dividers between sides of the room.
