How to Turn a Loft Into a Bedroom

A bedroom loft can be an excellent addition to your home. If you already have a loft space that you're currently using for storage, it should not be that difficult for you to turn it into a functional bedroom. By adding another bedroom, you will actually be increasing the value of your home -- not to mention that you and your family will be able to enjoy the newly converted loft as a permanent bedroom for a family member or as a guest room.

Instructions

    • 1

Work with a home renovation contractor to make any structural changes that are necessary to turn the loft into a bedroom. For example, additional roof beams, new flooring or a closet might need to be added. In some cases, the contractor might even need to consult with a structural engineer, which is why it's important to work with professionals.

    • 2

Get the necessary permits from your local planning office if any structural changes do need to be made to the space.

    • 3

Layout the design for the furniture you plan to add to the loft once it's a bedroom. This will show if you have enough room for what you want. Use a tape measure and take measurements carefully. For a bedroom, you likely will need a bed, dresser, shelving and bedside tables.

    • 4

Complete the surfaces of the loft space before adding the furniture. This includes adding plush carpeting, painting the walls or adding wallpaper. If you don't want to install carpeting, you can opt for a large area rug instead.

    • 5

Slide in the furniture and arrange it appropriately. The ceiling of the loft will likely dip at one side of the room. This is where the top of the bed should be, because no one will need to stand upright at the top of the bed. Hidden storage space, such as under the bed or inside a bench seat, can make the loft bedroom more functional.
