Benefits of an Insulated Garage

When it comes to insulation, the garage is often an overlooked area of the home. Homeowners who only use it as a place to park their cars or for quick home improvement projects may not see the value in protecting the space from drafts and heat loss. There are actually several benefits to insulating garage, regardless of how you use it. You may just find that the modest initial investment pays big dividends in the long run.
  1. Prevents Heat Loss

    • If your garage is attached to your home, an uninsulated garage may allow substantial heat loss from your home, particularly in rooms that share a wall with the garage. The area around an un-insulated metal garage door, in particular, can allow a significant amount of heat to escape during colder months. In the summer, cool air from your air conditioner may also escape due to the lack of insulation in the garage. By insulating your garage, you reduce the heat transfer that may occur, so you are able to reduce your heating and cooling costs and enjoy a more comfortable temperature in your home -- no matter the season.

    Prevents Pest Infestation

    • Insulating your garage provides increased protection against pest infestation. Insects, rodents and other critters are often able to find their way into the home around an uninsulated door or through cracks in uninsulated walls. While the insulation itself makes it more difficult for pests to enter, you can also opt for insulation that is specially treated with insecticides to keep pests like termites, ants, silverfish and cockroaches out of your garage.

    Increases Usage

    • A lack of insulation may not be a serious issue if you only use your garage to store your car and holiday decorations. Insulation, however, can make your garage comfortable enough for use as a workshop or potting shed. You can also turn your garage into a recreational room with ping-pong table or pool table if you add insulation. You may even be able to use the space as a home office or gym if you combine a simple space heater or portable air conditioner with the insulation.

    Blocks Noise

    • Insulating your garage can help reduce exterior noise from the street and neighborhood surrounding your home. If you plan to use the garage as a workshop, office, recreational room or other space that will see frequent use, the reduction in noise may be a significant benefit. For attached garages, it can reduce the noise from inside the space as well, meaning you'll be less likely to disturb family members in other parts of the house if you are using power tools or other noisy equipment.
