How to Make Basement Ductwork More Attractive

Finishing a basement may involve adding an office, exercise room, extra bedroom or even a game room or home theater room. Unfortunately, many basements have ugly, exposed, galvanized duct work that hangs from the ceiling. You may cover the duct work with drywall or a drop ceiling, but the basement will look smaller as a result. To make the duct work blend without hiding it and to make it more attractive, simply paint the duct work.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread drop cloths over the basement floor. They will catch paint that accidentally drips.

    • 2

Set stools or ladders in the basement to help you reach all parts of the duct work.

    • 3

Combine one part trisodium phosphate (TSP) with three parts water in a bucket.

    • 4

Clean dust and dirt from the duct work thoroughly using the TSP-water mixture, rags and sponges. Rinse the cleaned duct work with sponges soaked in plain water. Allow the duct work to air dry.

    • 5

Apply a coat of metal paint primer to the duct work with a paintbrush. Let the primer dry completely, which takes at least three hours.

    • 6

Paint the duct work a color or colors of your choosing with paintbrushes.
