How to Cut a Tile Backsplash with a Grinder

Whether you are cutting tile for a backsplash before you install the tile or you need to cut the tile after it is already installed, there are only a handful of tools that will accomplish the task. While a tile saw can only be used before the tile goes on the wall, you can use a handheld angle grinder to cut the tile even after it has been put on the wall.

Things You'll Need

  • 4-inch angle grinder with diamond blade
  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask
  • Masking tape
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers

Protect the piece of tile you are going to be cutting with the grinder. Cover the area you are cutting with a couple layers of masking tape to keep the tile from chipping. Mark the piece of tile you are going to cut on top of the layer of masking tape.

Cut any grout out surrounding the piece of tile you need to cut. Vibrations from the blade as it cuts the tile can affect other pieces in the installation if the vibrations carry through the grout to adjacent tiles. If the grout is gone the tile will vibrate on its own as you cut it. Pull the trigger on the grinder and let the blade sink into the joint to remove the grout around your cut area.

Cut the piece of tile or tiles with the grinder. Hold the grinder firmly in both hands and use the lines on your masking tape as a guide for the blade. Pull the trigger on the grinder and push the blade down into the face of the tile along your marks. Cut the perimeter of the area and then cut an X across the area. Use a screwdriver and pair of pliers to remove the remnants of the cut.
