How to Make a Round Edge on Wood Molding

When you’re looking for a way to transform a room or add character to the kitchen cabinets but don’t want to break the bank, wood molding is the answer. Crown molding takes the plain walls in a room and creates an eye-catching accent with the slightly flared, rounded top edges next to the ceiling. Decorative wood molding with rounded edges adds elegance and height to ordinary kitchen cabinets. Create a smooth, sleek round edge on wood molding with a special wood router bit.

Instructions

  1. Use a Router Table

    • 1

Secure the router upside down to the underside of the router table. The table has a cutout where you can mount it from the bottom. The router comes with screws for just this purpose. Use those screws from the router manufacturer to secure it to the table.

    • 2

Mount the round-over router bit into the router. Press the bit into the router until it clicks into place at the depth you want for the rounded edge.

    • 3

Put on safety glasses to protect your eyes from wood debris.

    • 4

Place the wood molding flat on the router table. Run the wood molding slowly over the router to create the rounded edge.

    Use a Hand-held Router

    • 5

Mount the round-over router bit into the hand-held router. Place the bit to the depth you want for the rounded edge.

    • 6

Set the board on the edge of a flat work surface with the side you want to round facing outward.

    • 7

Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from the sawdust the router will create.

    • 8

Pass the router slowly over the edge of the molding to create a neat, rounded edge. Start at the end closest to you and work your way up.
