DIY Garage Workstation

The garage is an ideal place to work on projects such as building a birdhouse, working on your car or making arts and crafts. A carefully designed workstation can make whatever project you are doing more productive and enjoyable. Lots of good lighting, a clean, roomy work surface, comfortable seating, and organized storage for tools, parts and materials all create an environment conducive to creativity. Instructions

    • 1

Clear an area in the garage for your workstation, either a corner or one-half of the garage. Take everything out of the area and sort through it, discarding junk and trash, donating items you don’t need and storing seasonal and other items you want to keep.

    • 2

Clean the area well, sweeping and vacuuming, inspecting the electrical outlets and looking at all ceilings and walls, checking for cracks, peeling paint and other things that need attention. Paint walls and ceilings a light color to keep your workstation area bright.

    • 3

Cover the workstation floor area with interlocking rubber garage floor tiles, floor mats or other suitable floor covering. Alternatively, seal the floor and paint it with cement floor paint.

    • 4

Install pegboard or slatwall on at least one wall, and hang up hooks and arms for tools and project accessories.

    • 5

Hang several large fluorescent shop lamps, or hire an electrician to install them.

    • 6

Bring in a large workbench or island and workshop stool. Place a workbench along a wall, or a workstation island in the center of the workstation area. Bring in the storage cabinet and place it along a wall.

    • 7

Arrange tools and accessories on the pegboard or slatwall so they are organized and within easy reach. Store work project materials in the storage cabinet and under the workbench, in labeled bins or storage boxes.
