Lay the board on its edge on the jointer's infeed table. Line the board up with the side of the jointer's blades closest to you.
Adjust the jointer's metal fence until the fence lies flush with the face of the board. Turn the metal knob behind the fence that locks it in place. This ensures that the machine will edge the board in a straight line.
Put on safety glasses. Turn on the jointer. Push the board slowly across the jointer knives while applying gentle pressure on the board.
Repeat the process if the board's first pass through the jointer does not sufficiently straighten the edge.
