How to Find the Length of a Wire Wrapped Around a Pipe

In some building and plumbing applications, there may be instances in which wires or cords have been wrapped around PVC, copper or other types of pipe. There are any number of reasons why a builder or contractor ranging from laziness to not wanting the wiring to interfere with other. Whatever the case may be, if the wire ever needs to be replaced, the proper length will have to be determined. The only way to accurately determine the length of a wire wrapped around a pipe is to unwind it and measure it.

      Trace the wiring that is wrapped around the pipe at each end to determine what it is connected to.

      Shut the power off at the circuit board if the wiring is connected to a live power source or if the wire carries alternating current.

      Disconnect the wire at both ends. Use a pair of pliers or a screwdriver to unfasten the ends of the wire if necessary.

      Lay the wire out in an open flat area and measure it from end to end with a tape measure. This will give an exact and accurate measurement of length.
