Good Staplers for Plywood

Building homes and working on construction projects means coming into contact with a variety of tools, such as hammer tackers and staplers. If you are stapling material down on top of plywood, such as felt paper, wire mesh or plastic sheeting, there are a number of staplers you can choose from. The exact type you use depends on your personal preference, and you can choose from a range of hand-operated versions to pneumatic devices.
  1. Handheld

    • One of the oldest types of staplers you can find on the market are handheld models. This type is held in one hand and operated with a squeeze mechanism. Handheld staplers are ideal for precision stapling because you can position each staple where you need it before you squeeze the handle, which then drives the staple into the plywood. However, these are also tedious to operate and require a fair amount of physical hand strength.

    Hammer Tacker

    • If you are doing rough-in construction, such as tacking down felt paper or wire mesh, one of the best tool options is a hammer tacker. What these lack in precision they make up for in speed. As its name implies, it resembles a hammer, with the staples loaded into the handle of the device. The user swings it down on the floor or other plywood surface; and when the tip comes into contact with the plywood, it dispenses the staple and drives it into the wood.

    Pneumatic

    • Best reserved for large-scale projects when you have a lot of stapling to do, pneumatic staplers operate by way of an air compressor, just like their nail gun cousins. The process is the same, with the staples loaded into the stapler; and once it is connected to an air compressor, the user simply presses the head of the machine against the plywood and pulls the trigger. The forced air from the compressor's hose drives the staple into the plywood.

    Portable

    • Although they are available as separate devices, you can also purchase portable staplers as part of packaged kits that also come with a drill, reciprocating saw and circular saw. Portable staplers are battery-operated and ideal for projects where you need portability along with mechanized handling. The size depends on if you purchase one with a kit or a stand-alone model.
