Do You Use Acetone When Reglazing a Cultured Marble Vanity?

Cultured marble is a manufactured building material made from crushed limestone and fiberglass resin that has the appearance of molded marble. Technically known as a cast polymer, cultured marble is typically finished with a clear gelcoat that gives it a tough, stain-resistant, non-porous surface that is easy to clean. The surface of your cultured marble vanity can be damaged by sharp objects, abrasives and burns, which may require reglazing. That process includes the use of acetone.
  1. Maintenance

    • You can maintain the beauty and luster of your cultured marble vanity top by cleaning it regularly with a mild liquid detergent to remove household dust and debris. Wipe the surface with acetone and a soft cloth to remove stubborn soap scum, wax or grease. Dull surfaces can be restored to their shine by polishing them with a liquid or paste wax.

    Damaged Surfaces

    • Your cultured marble vanity top may be scratched or dulled by abrasive cleaners, discolored by cigarette or curling-iron burns, or show wear and tear from the normal course of life. The surface can be refinished or reglazed professionally, or you can do it yourself with a commercially available cultured marble refinishing kit.

    Preparation

    • You should only refinish a cultured marble surface when the room temperature is above 60 degrees, according to the Bathtub Refinishing Referral Network. The entire surface must be completely clean, dry and free from dust, debris and rust. Use acetone to remove any soap scum, wax and grease from the surface. Lightly sand your vanity's cultured marble surface with 320-grit sandpaper to prepare it to receive the bonding agent.

    Reglazing

    • Remove all dust and debris resulting from sanding the vanity top by wiping the entire surface with acetone and a soft cloth. Allow the acetone to evaporate completely prior to spraying with the bonding agent. Allow the bonding agent to cure for at least five minutes, but no more than one hour, then spray on one coat of the refinisher paint. Apply three coats of the refinisher coat, allowing at least five minutes between coats. Clean up any runs or overspray with a paper towel saturated with acetone. Allow the surface to dry for at least 24 to 48 hours.
