How to Run Electricity to a Router Table

Most router tables intended for home use in a garage or workshop come already wired. Their power cords, however, are often not very long--meaning you must place the tables directly against a wall. This positioning is not always practical, because many woodworkers deal with large pieces of wood and therefore need access to the tables from all sides. Extending the wiring enables you to place your router table in a more practical spot, the center of a room.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your router table in the desired location in your garage or workshop. Measure the distance from the router table to a wall outlet in the room using a measuring tape. If possible, designate a wall outlet for the router's cord that is within direct sight of the router table, rather than around a corner.

    • 2

Obtain an extension cord that is long enough to reach from the router table to the wall outlet.

    • 3

Purchase a floor wire cover in the same length as the extension cord. Look for a version made of durable plastic and with a small arch to its shape, similar to a small speed bump.

Plug the extension cord into the wall outlet and then into the router table power cord. Run the extension cord along the ground and place the floor wire cover over the cord to keep it protected and to prevent people from tripping over it. Run a length of two-sided tape underneath the cover to secure it to the floor.
