Black & Decker Reversible Drill Chuck Removal

For more than 100 years Black & Decker has manufactured tools and appliances for the home. In addition to lawn mowers, vacuum cleaners and paper shredders, the company also produces a variety of power tools, including reversible drills. The chuck removal and bit insertion on a reversible drill isn't difficult, but must be done correctly for the tool to work properly.
  1. Chuck Removal

    • To remove the chuck on your Black & Decker reversible drill, remove the screw on the side of the chuck. This screw has a reverse thread, so turn the screwdriver clockwise to remove it. Insert an Allen wrench into the chuck where a drill bit would go. Use a hammer or heavy mallet to hit the arm of the Allen wrench to turn the wrench in a counterclockwise direction. This will loosen the chuck enough for you to take it off the drill.

    Bit Insertion

    • To insert a bit into the chuck, open the chuck jaws with the key by turning the key counterclockwise one-quarter to one-half turn in each of the three key holes on the chuck. Place the bit in the chuck as far as it can go. Position the bit so when the jaws close, they close onto the flat portion of the bit, not the portion where it tapers. Turn the key clockwise in each of the three chuck key holes to close the jaws and lock the bit into place.

    About Reversible Drills

    • The difference between a reversible drill and a standard drill is that a reversible drill drills both clockwise and counterclockwise. The two drilling directions allow you to remove and insert screws. If you're working on a project where you need to remove multiple screws, such as taking apart a structure, a reversible drill makes the project go more quickly than removing the screws with a screwdriver.

    Black & Decker Models

    • Black & Decker offers a few models of reversible drills. The 7152 is a 3/8-inch single-speed model. The 7252 is also a 3/8-inch drill, but it offers variable speeds. Both of these have 3-amp, 1200-rpm motors. For a cordless model, choose the two-speed 9099KC drill.
