How to Use a Vacuum Clamp

A vacuum clamp holds a work piece to a stable surface using atmospheric pressure. The clamp has a seal that forms air chambers between the clamp and the work piece. The vacuum pump removes air from the chambers, which reduces the atmospheric pressure in the space between the clamp and the work piece. The surrounding atmosphere presses on the work piece as it attempts to equalize the pressure and holds the piece against the clamp. The top and sides of the work piece are then unobstructed and easily worked on.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the vacuum clamp on a stable, sturdy work bench. Drive one wood screw through each mounting hole into the work bench top.

    • 2

Connect the vacuum clamp to the ball valve using the supplied tubing. The manufacturer of each vacuum clamp has a specific method of making the connections. Some allow you to simply insert the tubing into the connection port, others put the tubing onto a connector with a clamp to hold it in place.

Connect the ball valve to the vacuum pump with the second piece of tubing. Turn the valve to the closed position and turn on the vacuum pump. Allow the pump time to evacuate the surge tank.

Place the plywood over the top of the vacuum clamp so the entire clamp is covered. Press the plywood against the clamp with the palm of your hand. As the seal is made, the atmospheric pressure will push the plywood against the clamp and hold it securely in place.
